Harare is Golf country. Our own in-house golfer has listed his own preferred golf courses. Have a good look and tee-off with confidence.
Royal Harare Golf Club
In 1979, Golf Digest voted Royal Harare one of the fifty best courses in the world, outside of the United States. After a redesign in 1996 by Nick Price and Steve Smyers, the course was rejuvenated and lengthened with some major re-routing of holes. The New Course was opened for play on the 25th October 1997, prior to the Centenary celebrations in April 1998. The New Course is very highly rated by Professionals and Amateurs alike as a “Classic” test of Golf.
Despite its manicured lush appearance, Royal Harare is indeed no pushover; the course rewards shrewd shot choice and Course Management. Many a golfer has been lulled into carelessness by the veneer of ease that the course projects, only to be humiliated. Play wisely and you will be rewarded.
Chapman Golf Course
Redesigned in 1995 by one of Southern Africa’s leading golf course architects, Peter Matkovich, Chapman has emerged as one of Africa’s most prestigious golf courses. With the preferred Bent grass replacing the old Florida grass greens, improved Kikuyu fairways and the addition of several well situated bunkers, the course presents the golfer with a fantastic challenge in beautiful surroundings.
Not only does the tributary of the Mukuvisi River enhance the beauty of the course, but it also provides an added obstacle for the unwary golfer.
The course offers a range of challenging and spectacular holes with the 6th, 9th, 11th and 14th holes all structured close to the water hazards. The par five 14th was completely re-shaped, with two dams combined into one and running the length of the fairway. This green juts out slightly into the dam and provides a fantastic challenge for the professional, whilst still allowing the less adept amateur the chance to play safe and contend with the bunkers rather than the less forgiving water.
The par three 17th is heavily guarded by 10 meter wide bunkers running almost the full length of the green on both sides. With only a small gap at the front between the bunkers this is definitely a test for any golfer.
Borrowdale Brooke Golf Course
The magnificent 18-hole golf course was designed and built by Peter Matkovich in consultation with Nick Price, to United States Golf Association standards. Borrowdale Brooke Golf Club was opened by Nick Price on 27th November 1998. The course has developed beautifully with many big trees and 209 bird species have been on the course and in the gardens on The Estate.
Besides this list there are other attractive courses in Harare. Just to mention a few: Wingate, The Police Golf course and Warren Hills.
We, at Nyati Travel, will be delighted, to organize a golf trip in Harare or beyond!
